We were recently asked to look at the fabrication of a rubber products press frame, used to manufacture large gaskets for the offshore wind farm industry.
The physical size of the press meant that it was quite large to transport as a finished item, so we looked at manufacture of the press in 2 pieces, with in-situ welding of the top half to the bottom on-site.
To facilitate assembly and alignment, we manufactured a "setting frame", machined with pads top and bottom, set parallel to enable the correct height and parallel "daylight" to be easily achieved, bolted to the bottom using the locating holes for the 3 hydraulic cylinders which power the press.
After weld-up, the 4 site welds were in-situ stress relieved, another Arnway speciality.
